According to the Globe and Mail, those of us who have left filing our income taxes to the last minute – or think that since the “deadline” has passed that we are already late, take a breath! A CRA blunder means the deadline has been pushed to May 5th, and any Canadian who files before this date won’t face late penalties.

According to the article, “Due to human error, an incorrect notification was sent around to tax preparers on Friday.” The incorrect notice states “All returns transmitted electronically up until 3:00 a.m., Eastern Time, Tuesday May 5, 2015, will be considered as filed on time.” They attempted to retract this statement, but eventually found that the confusion necessitated an extended deadline.

So, if you’ve yet to file, take this as a sign – and get those taxes in pronto!
